Northwest Healthcare Takes Care of You – and the Place We Call Home
3/31/2022
In 2021, Northwest Healthcare continued to embrace the privilege of serving our patients, families and beloved Pima County communities. People from all walks of life relied on safe, high-quality care from our skilled, compassionate doctors, nurses and support staff – no matter how challenging the circumstances.
As the pandemic stretched into its second year, we continued to care for those affected. By March 2022, we had performed more than 81,000 COVID-19 tests and admitted about 3,700 COVID-19 positive inpatients to our hospitals – all while sustaining the excellent everyday care our communities have come to expect. For example, we hosted 640,000 outpatient visits; helped families welcome 1,600 new babies; performed 39,500 surgeries; and treated 101,200 people in our emergency departments.
We’re committed to helping Pima County grow and prosper. We helped people get well and live healthier in so many ways – less pain thanks to a joint replacement, a heart beating in rhythm with the help of a pacemaker; a smile of relief after a clear screening mammogram or colonoscopy – each of these moments inspires us to find new and better ways to serve our communities.
Underneath the surface, our reach spans even further. Northwest Healthcare is proud to be a major local employer, investing our resources so you have better access to quality healthcare, right here at home.
Our overall community benefit – meaning the goods and services we offer to address community needs – exceeded $482.2 million last year. We gave over $48.1 million in charity and uncompensated care for the community’s most vulnerable. The $46.9 million we paid in property, sales and gross receipts tax helps support civic resources and services. The hospital’s payroll of more than $238 million boosts the local economy.
In 2022, we continue to evolve and dedicate resources to patient-centered medical services, technologies, and facilities – including our new Northwest Medical Center Houghton, a 52-bed, full-service hospital opening this spring on Tucson’s east side.
Our existing hospitals are thriving. Northwest Medical Center Sahuarita recently celebrated its one-year anniversary of serving the Sahuarita and Green Valley communities; adding new robotic orthopedic services to its service menu. Oro Valley Hospital introduced skilled nursing, which means more options for patients who need extra time to recover from an injury or illness. In addition, we built Northwest Transitions, an inpatient rehabilitation facility on the Northwest Medical Center campus.
To keep pace with community needs, we expanded our medical staff – recruiting more than 50 doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. And, because we have our eyes on the future, we laid groundwork for a graduate medical education program to give the next generation of physicians plenty of hands-on experience taking care of patients.
In short, we are part of this community, and we are committed to doing everything we can to provide excellent healthcare services and make our communities healthier and better for all.
