Chronic Inflammation: The Silent Threat Behind Multiple Serious Conditions

                      9/18/2026

Jonathan Ma, D.O.Unlike acute inflammation, which helps the body recover from injury or infection, chronic inflammation occurs when the immune system remains activated for months or even years. That ongoing response gradually damages healthy tissues and organs, contributing to conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, arthritis and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease.

"Inflammation is one of the body's most important defense mechanisms," says Dr. Jonathan Ma, D.O., an internal medicine physician at Northwest Primary Care at Rancho Sahuarita. "When you cut your finger or develop an infection, inflammation is what helps your body heal. The concern isn't inflammation itself – it's when the immune system stays activated after the original threat is gone. That ongoing inflammation can contribute to damage throughout the body over time."

Because chronic inflammation often develops without obvious symptoms, many people don't realize they may be affected. Common warning signs include persistent fatigue, brain fog, muscle and joint pain, digestive problems, skin conditions and recurring infections. Among these, physicians say ongoing fatigue is one of the most common early indicators.

"Chronic inflammation doesn't announce itself with dramatic symptoms," says Dr. Ma. "People may simply notice they're more tired than usual, their joints ache or they just don't feel like themselves. Those symptoms are common and can have many causes, but they shouldn't be ignored."

Multiple factors can contribute to chronic inflammation, including obesity, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, chronic stress, inadequate sleep, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, autoimmune disorders and persistent infections.

The good news is that many of these risk factors are modifiable.

“Many of the same habits we recommend to prevent heart disease, diabetes and other chronic illnesses also help reduce inflammation," says Dr. Ma. "Eating more whole, minimally processed foods, staying physically active, getting adequate sleep, managing stress and maintaining a healthy weight all support a healthier immune system. These aren't quick fixes, but rather long-term investments in your overall health."

Emerging research also suggests that these habits may help protect brain health. A recent study published in JAMA Network Open found that older adults who consumed diets with lower inflammatory potential had a significantly lower risk of developing dementia, even among individuals with biological markers associated with higher risk.

Nutrition is an area where patients can make meaningful changes. An anti-inflammatory eating pattern is about consistently choosing more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats like olive oil, and omega-3-rich fish while cutting back on ultra-processed foods and added sugars. These choices benefit far more than inflammation: they support cardiovascular, metabolic and brain health as well.

If you are experiencing persistent fatigue or other unexplained symptoms, be sure to speak to your primary care provider to determine whether an evaluation is needed.
