TUCSON, AZ (May 1, 2024) – Northwest Healthcare is inviting women to sign up for "Keep Your Selfie Healthy: A Women’s Health Week Challenge" in honor of National Women’s Health Week (May 14-20).
This seven-day email series will contain important information about health issues that are more prevalent among women, including heart disease, autoimmune diseases, pelvic floor issues, and sleep disorders. We’ll also talk about the changes that come along with menopause. In other words, we’ll help you focus on your selfies!
It’s essential to turn our lenses on ourselves when it comes to prioritizing health and well-being. Not only are certain challenges more common to women than men (80% of patients with autoimmune disease are female) the symptoms aren’t always the same. For example, heart disease symptoms often present differently in women than men.
“Women tend to spend a lot of time and effort caring for the people we love,” said Dr. Stacey Yell, M.D., a gynecologist with Northwest OB/GYN at Fountain Plaza in Tucson. “That’s a wonderful thing – but we want women to know how important it is for them to take care of themselves, as well.”
For women, this kind of self-care includes staying on top of preventive gynecological screenings such as Pap smears and mammography. The latter is currently spotlighted in the national news because new guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force urge women who are at average risk of breast cancer to get a mammogram every other year, beginning at age 40.
Some other self-care measures you can do on your own include stress management; proper nutrition; regular physical activity; and tobacco avoidance. If you find yourself behind on your screenings, or would like some guidance when it comes to listening to your instincts and living your healthiest life, please visit https://www.nwalliedphysicians.com/ob-gyn.
Don’t forget to sign up for the Challenge – and encourage your moms, wives, sisters, daughters, and girlfriends to do the same!
