Community encouraged to take advantage of early detection opportunity
TUCSON, AZ – Sept. 12, 2025 – Northwest Healthcare hosted community members at a free Hernia Screening Day on Wed., Sept. 10, at Northwest Medical Center.
This educational event allowed attendees to get a brief, confidential hernia evaluation from an experienced medical professional in order to identify potential hernias – which can otherwise go unnoticed in early stages.
“Hernias often start small and may not cause pain at first, but over time they can lead to serious problems if left untreated,” said Anyul Ferez-Pinzon M.D., a general surgeon with Northwest General Surgery at Oro Valley.
It’s important to speak with your primary care provider about regular hernia screenings. You may benefit from a screening if you:
- Are experiencing abdominal discomfort or a bulge
- Regularly lift heavy objects
- Have a family history of hernias
- Are an athlete or a very active person
“Early detection is key – it allows us to provide treatment options to help prevent discomfort, complications, and even emergency surgery down the road," said Dr. Ferez-Pinzon.
