Northwest Medical Center Celebrates First Graduate Medical Education Program’s Internal Medicine Class
6/17/2026
After three final years of training, 13 new physicians graduated from Northwest Medical Center’s graduate medical education internal medicine (IM) residency program, which is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
We celebrate this IM cohort – NMC’s very first – preparing to enter the workforce at a time of growing physician shortages nationwide, and we honor the experienced GME leaders and mentors who devote their time and talents to the program.
Several of this year’s graduates of the program – which prioritizes physician recruitment and retention – are choosing to remain and work in Southern Arizona.
“The future of safe, quality patient care is vital to Southern Arizona, and our GME program prioritizes physician training with that in mind,” said Kevin Fleming, M.D., GME IM program director and attending physician. “I’m very happy that several of our graduates are choosing to remain in Southern Arizona after residency.”
In addition to IM, our GME program includes a family medicine residency cohort and a transitional year residency dedicated to fundamental clinical skills necessary for physician board certification in the field of the physician’s choosing. Soon, NMC will cut the ribbon on a large new building designed to house both the IM and FM clinics.
“I enjoy mentoring physicians during their final years of medical training,” said Dr. Fleming. “Being a doctor is not just about what you learn in the classroom; it's also about how you engage with your patients. I enjoy helping these talented physicians build and hone skills that will impact patients for decades.”
Congratulations, GME graduates – and profound gratitude to our leaders, teachers, mentors, and staff!
