CMS distinction highlights top 12% national ranking for safety, staffing, and clinical quality
ORO VALLEY, Ariz. — The skilled nursing unit (SNU) at Oro Valley Hospital has officially been designated as a High-Performing Facility by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Introduced under updated CMS standards, the national recognition places Oro Valley Hospital in the top ~12% of facilities nationwide—and distinguishes it as the only skilled nursing facility in the Tucson area to earn this designation.
The CMS High-Performance distinction recognizes nursing and rehabilitation facilities that consistently demonstrate higher staffing ratios, fewer safety violations, and superior patient health outcomes.
"Earning this badge from CMS is a testament to the daily operational and clinical excellence of our staff," said Erica Runyon, skilled nursing unit administrator at Oro Valley Hospital. "It reflects our team's commitment to high-quality standards, patient safety, and compassionate care. Being recognized as the sole facility in greater Tucson with this status reinforces that local families can access top-tier post-acute care right here in Oro Valley."
"This achievement is a direct reflection of our team's collective effort and hard work," added Dr. John Wadleigh, D.O. and skilled nursing unit medical director at Oro valley Hospital, part of Northwest Healthcare. "Every clinician, therapist, and caregiver on our unit plays a vital role in helping our patients safely regain their strength and independence."
Located on the third floor of Oro Valley Hospital, the skilled nursing unit provides specialized short-term care, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and 24/7 medical oversight for patients recovering from illness, injury, or surgery.
"We are incredibly proud of the entire skilled nursing team for setting the benchmark for post-acute quality in Southern Arizona," said Josh Custer, interim chief executive officer and chief financial officer of Oro Valley Hospital. "This Medicare recognition gives our community complete peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are receiving care in a safe, top-performing environment."
