Feeling Tired? Your Primary Care Provider Can Help You Find Out Why

                      9/8/2026

Everyone feels tired from time to time. A busy week, a few nights of poor sleep or added stress can leave you feeling drained. But when fatigue sticks around — or begins interfering with work, exercise, family time or the activities you enjoy — it may be worth talking with your primary care provider.

Ganapathiyadan“Fatigue is something we hear about frequently in primary care, and there isn’t always one simple explanation,” said Navaneeth Ganapathiyadan, M.D., family medicine physician with Northwest Primary Care at Vail. “Our goal is to look at the whole person their symptoms, lifestyle, medical history and overall health to help determine what may be contributing to how they feel.”

                      Why am I so tired?

Fatigue can have many potential causes. Some are related to everyday habits, while others may point to an underlying health issue. A primary care provider can help you evaluate factors such as:

                      • Sleep quality. Even if you spend seven or eight hours in bed, interrupted or poor-quality sleep can leave you feeling tired during the day. Sleep habits, snoring or certain sleep disorders may affect how rested you feel.
                      • Stress and emotional health. Ongoing stress can take a physical toll. Changes in mood, anxiety and other emotional health concerns can also affect sleep, energy and motivation.
                      • Nutrition and hydration. Not eating enough, skipping meals, dehydration or deficiencies in certain nutrients can contribute to low energy.
                      • Anemia or vitamin deficiencies. Low iron or deficiencies in nutrients such as vitamin B12 may cause fatigue and other symptoms.
                      • Thyroid or hormonal changes. The thyroid helps regulate many of the body's functions, including metabolism and energy. Changes in thyroid function or other hormonal shifts may sometimes contribute to fatigue.
                      • Blood sugar changes. Fatigue can sometimes be associated with changes in blood sugar. Your provider can help determine whether screening for diabetes or other metabolic conditions is appropriate.
                      • Medications. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications may cause drowsiness or fatigue. Your provider can review what you're taking and discuss possible side effects.
                      • Other medical conditions. Persistent fatigue can also occur with infections and a variety of chronic health conditions, which is one reason it is important not to simply assume that being tired is something you have to live with.

Start with your primary care provider

Because fatigue can have so many potential causes, your primary care provider can be a good place to start.

During an appointment, your provider may ask when your symptoms began, how well you're sleeping, whether you've experienced other changes and how fatigue is affecting your daily life. Depending on your symptoms and health history, your provider may also recommend lab work or additional evaluation.

“Patients know when something feels different from their normal,” Dr. Ganapathiyadan said. “If you're consistently tired despite getting adequate rest, or your energy level has noticeably changed, talk with your primary care provider. That conversation can help us decide whether there are lifestyle changes, screenings or other evaluations that may be appropriate.”

Primary care isn't only for when you're sick. Regular visits give you and your provider an opportunity to follow changes over time, stay current with recommended screenings and preventive care, manage ongoing conditions and address new concerns before they have a larger impact on your health.

                      Make your health a priority

If persistent fatigue is keeping you from feeling like yourself, consider making an appointment with your primary care provider.

Navaneeth Ganapathiyadan, M.D., is a family medicine physician with Northwest Primary Care at Vail, located at 10120 E. Old Vail Rd., Suite 100 in Tucson.

If you already have a primary care provider, schedule an appointment to discuss changes in your energy level or other health concerns.
