Free Hernia Screening at Northwest Medical Center Houghton on Wed., Feb. 15

If you think you might have a groin or abdominal hernia, please register for our free hernia screening from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Northwest Medical Center Houghton, 2200 S. Houghton Rd.
Please note: Space is limited. Three time slots are available at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. You must register in advance, as walk-ins will not be accepted. Patients must be aged at least 18.
General surgeons will present a brief overview about hernias and their treatment and then provide a free, quick exam to help determine your next steps. You can also "test drive" the surgical robot often used to perform hernia surgeries.
The primary symptom of a hernia is often pain (mild or severe). Other symptoms may include:
- A bulge on either side of your pubic bone, which may become more visible when standing, coughing or straining.
- A burning or aching sensation at the hernia site.
- A feeling of heaviness or weakness in your groin.
- Severe pain in your abdomen.
- Outward bulging of skin or tissues in your abdominal area.
- Nausea.
- Sudden pain that quickly gets worse.
- A hernia bulge that turns red, purple or dark.
- Nausea, vomiting or both.
- Fever.An inability to move your bowels or pass gas.
