Oro Valley Hospital Offering Robotic-Assisted Total Knee replacement
12/13/2017
Tucson, AZ (December 12, 2017) — Oro Valley Hospital (OVH) has expanded the capabilities of its robotic surgical technology and is now offering robotic-assisted total knee replacement in addition to the robotic-assisted partial knee resurfacing and total hip replacement already available at the hospital.
The demand for joint replacements is expected to rise in the next decade with total knee replacements estimated to increase 673 percent by 2030 and total hip replacements by174 percent. Oro Valley Hospital CEO Jae L. Dale said, “We’re proud to be able to offer this technology to the residents of Oro Valley and surrounding areas. We’ve seen demand for knee and hip replacements expand over the past several years and this technology provides another option for our patients considering a joint replacement procedure.”
Robotic-assisted joint replacement uses a virtual 3D model of the patient’s knee or hip so the surgeon can create the patient’s surgical plan before stepping into the operating room. During surgery, the surgeon uses the robotic arm for bone preparation and placement of the implant. The surgical plan can be validated or adjustments made as needed during surgery.
“Utilizing the robotic arm during surgery to precisely place the implant can be more accurate than a ‘manual’ knee or hip replacement procedure,” said Dr. Kevin Bowers, the hospital’s Section of Orthopedics Chair. “We were the first in Tucson several years ago to use this technology for partial knee replacement and I’m pleased we’ve expanded its use for total knee and total hip replacement procedures.”
