Providers Remind Families: Get Back-to-School Checkups

Tucson, Ariz. – As districts in southern Arizona gear up for the start of school, Northwest Healthcare Providers are reminding families how important it is to get back-to-school checkups and immunizations.
“It’s really important to make sure children are immunized, and get in to see their primary care provider for a checkup,” said Diane Trotter, family nurse practitioner with Northwest Primary Care in Sahuarita. “An annual physical and proper immunizations will start your child’s new school year on a healthy foundation,” said Trotter.
Studies show many Americans had put off well visits because they were worried about contracting COVID-19 during the coronavirus pandemic, but providers are urging families not to put off visits.
“COVID vaccinations are not yet available for children under the age of 12, but they are available for children over 12, and most providers have them on hand. That’s definitely something to discuss with your child’s provider,” said Trotter. “That visit is also a good time to discuss other immunizations for children.”
Arizona school immunization law has requirements before entry to child care and school.
Providers recommend children receive an annual checkup with their primary care provider even if they are healthy. Generally, children will receive a full physical exam including measurements such as height and weight. This is a good time for parents to discuss any developmental, emotional or social concerns, as well as immunizations.
Most insurance plans, including Medicaid, cover a free annual well-child visit.
Guidelines for well-child visits and routine immunization schedules can be found on the American Academy of Pediatrics website. The Arizona Department of Health Services also provides an immunization requirements handbook, found here.
