Pain Management
Pain is a complex medical problem that can have a severe impact on your physical and mental well-being. At Northwest Tucson Surgery Center, we utilize several modes of pain intervention, including fluoroscopy (X-ray) guided procedures, to help decrease your pain and suffering and help restore optimal quality of life. Patients are usually scheduled for treatment after an initial consultation with a physician that specializes in pain management. Treatment usually occurs after an initial consultation with a physician that specializes in pain management and lasts for approximately three to six months.
Back Pain
Many people experience back pain. While pain can come on suddenly after a wrong twist or turn, pain may also develop gradually growing from occasional spasms to a chronic painful condition. Most back pain is caused by problems with muscles and ligaments, including herniated discs, a condition in which a portion of the disc protrudes into the area containing the spinal nerves. Pain or numbness in the legs, called sciatica, can be associated with herniated discs, fractures, degenerative changes of the spine or arthritis.
Pain Treatment Options
- Stellate ganglion block - an injection of local anesthetic and a small amount of steroids into a nerve on either side of the neck next to the voice box that is performed after your physician has diagnosed a face, neck or upper extremity condition.
- Facet joint injections - used for diagnosis or treatment of spinal mechanical pain usually associated with degenerative disc disease, post laminectomy syndrome and failed spine surgery syndrome. A short acting local anesthetic or long acting steroid is used with the injection.
- Epidural steroid injection - used for the treatment of several diagnosed pain-causing conditions, including back pain, to reduce swelling and inflammation.
At least five days before your pain management treatment, please notify the staff if you are taking blood thinners, sick or taking antibiotics.
