Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy, or OT, is designed to support patients as they regain independence and improve their quality of life. Occupational therapists specialize in helping patients improve their ability and confidence as they perform daily activities, including eating, bathing, and dressing – as well as using a computer, getting in and out of the car, running errands, and working. In addition, occupational therapists are specially trained to recommend ways patients can adapt their environments to enhance independence.
Our occupational therapy team works with other healthcare providers and therapists, including physical therapists, speech-language pathologists and physicians. Our OT team offers a range of therapy, services and education, including:
- Assessment of cognitive and physical abilities
- Goal-setting and planning to help overcome individual challenges which make daily tasks difficult
- Personalized exercises to improve functional ability, strength, range of motion, and endurance
- Activities to improve visual perceptual motor skills and sensory motor processing
- Recommendations for task modifications and use of assistive devices to promote greater independence
- Patient and family education and training to improve independence at home and in the community
- Coordination of care with physicians, surgeons, or specialists
We work closely with you and your family to develop a care plan to meet your unique needs, as well as to support and prepare your caregivers for your rehabilitation and recovery. When necessary, we also work with community organizations and outreach programs to help coordinate appropriate occupational therapy care plans.
